about me, elliot hopkins.

My name is Elliot (sometimes with a lowercase “e” depending on the vibes). The best way I can describe myself is that I’m a curious and creative person who loves mixing things like technology, design and storytelling to make work that feels meaningful. Whether I’m writing, designing or coding, I’m always creating.
But you probably want to hear more than that. That’s why you’re reading my about page, after all.
As far back as I can remember, I’ve been creative, and I’ve always been working on something new. You could say it’s because of who I am as a person, or you could say it’s because my mom didn’t want us mindlessly on screens and wanted us doing something creative as kids. Maybe that’s part of why I’ve also always been fascinated by technology — whether I was playing with pretend electronics, messing around with my dad’s computer or begging my parents for my own computer.
My creativity and my interest in technology often collided. As soon as I got my hands on technology, I started making things with it. I don’t think I’m the type of person who can just be a passive consumer of things. So I learned to code in Scratch, Python and JavaScript as I made small programs and games. I built all sorts of simple websites with HTML & CSS. I still have my favorite book from then, “How to Code” (which I’m willing to bet was not most kids’ favorite at that age). I also used technology for other projects, like recording and editing YouTube videos, making animated stop-motion LEGO brickfilms, drawing and “animating” in MS Paint and dabbling in some basic graphic design.
Now I’m a junior in high school, and I’m both very different yet very similar to my younger self (funny how that works, right?). Just like back then, I’m still always working on something, and I’m still picking up new interests in random and nerdy things. I don’t think that’s something I’ll ever stop doing.
These days, I’m writing for my high school’s student newspaper (as the online editor), designing graphics for various projects (including the logo for a student-run record label), and constantly experimenting with and tweaking this website. My dedication to making this site personal runs deep — even the font you see in the headers is my own handwriting.
At the core of everything I do — whether it’s journalism, design or music — is the same drive I had as a kid: a love of experimenting, tinkering and bringing ideas to life. For me, one of the best feelings in the world is taking something that only existed in my head and making it real, even if it might be small or “unimportant” to others.
I’m also passionate about creating things that carry personality and emotion. Especially now, in a world where a lot of things feel corporate and where AI is changing how we think about so many things, I think it’s more important than ever to make things that feel human.
As for the future, I have a lot of things I want to do at some point, like working in tech or becoming a teacher. Hopefully, I’ll get to them all in one way or another. Currently, I’m looking into pursuing both journalism and design through and beyond college. No matter what though, I think I’ll always want to have multiple creative endeavours at a time. No matter what I’m doing for work, I want at least another project outside it. It keeps me happy and motivated.
If you want to keep up with what I’m up to, you can, thanks to the wonderful invention of the internet! For a quick overview of what I’m up to, my now page has you covered.
