about me, elliot hopkins.

My name is Elliot (sometimes with a lowercase “e” depending on the vibes). The best way I can describe myself is that I’m a curious and creative person who loves mixing things like technology, design and storytelling to make work that feels meaningful and makes a impact. Whether I’m writing, designing or coding, I’m always creating.

But you probably want to hear more than that. I’d assume that’s why you’re reading my about page, after all.

Elliot as a child, around the age of 7, sitting in front of his first laptop computer, smiling.
Me sitting behind my first computer on my birthday.

As far back as I can remember, I’ve felt the need to be creative, and I’ve always been working on something new. You could say it’s because of who I am as a person, or you could say it’s because my mom didn’t want us mindlessly on screens and wanted us doing something creative as kids. Maybe that’s part of why I’ve also always been fascinated by technology — whether I was playing with pretend electronics, messing around with my dad’s computer or begging my parents for my own computer.

My creativity and my interest in technology often collided. As soon as I got my hands on technology, I started creating things with it. I don’t think I’m the type of person who can just be a passive consumer of things. I have an itch to make something myself. So I learned to code in Scratch, Python and JavaScript as I made small programs and games. I built all sorts of simple websites with HTML & CSS. Actually, I still have my favorite book from when I was younger, titled “How to Code” (which I’m willing to bet was not most kids’ favorite at that age). I also used technology for various other projects, like recording and editing YouTube videos, making animated stop-motion LEGO brickfilms, drawing and “animating” in MS Paint and dabbling in some basic graphic design.

I think it’s fair to say I was a weird kid. But I don’t think I’d want to change that. It made me who I am.

Now I’m a junior in high school, and I’m both very different yet very similar to my younger self (funny how that works, right?). Just like back then, I’m still always working on something, and I’m still picking up new interests in random and nerdy things. I can’t imagine how that’d be something I’d ever stop doing.

These days, I’m reporting on stories for my high school’s student newspaper (as the online editor), designing graphics for various projects (including the logo for a student-run record label club), having fun exploring Bluesky and the AT Protocol, and constantly experimenting with and tweaking this website. My dedication to making this site truly “personal” runs deep — even the font you see in the headers is my own handwriting.

At the core of everything I do — whether it’s design, music or journalism — is the same drive I had as a kid: a love of experimenting, tinkering and bringing ideas to life. For me, one of the best feelings in the world is taking something that only existed in my head and making it real, even if it might be something considered small or “unimportant” to others.

I’m passionate about creating things that carry personality and emotion. Especially now, in a world where a lot of things feel inpersonal and where AI is changing how we think about so many things, I think it’s more important than ever to make things that feel truly human.

As for the future, I have a lot of things I hope I get to do at some point — like working in tech or becoming a teacher. I hope I’ll get to them all in one way or another. Currently, I’m looking into pursuing both journalism and design through and beyond college. No matter what though, I think I’ll always want to have some sort of creative endeavour on the side. It keeps me feeling happy and motivated.

If you want to keep up with what I continue to do in the future, you can, thanks to the wonderful invention of the internet! For a quick overview of what I’m up to, my now page has you covered. For longer posts like this, check out my blog. And if you prefer shorter posts or just want to say hi, my socials page links my Bluesky, where I post the most these days.
